If your vehicle is 3 years old or more, you are required by law to have an MOT. The Ministry of Transport test, commonly known as the MOT test, is an annual safety check to ensure the vehicle meets minimum safety standards and levels of exhaust emissions set out by the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, formerly VOSA). During the MOT test the nominated tester, a person accredited by the DVSA to assess your vehicle, will conduct a comprehensive inspection to ensure the vehicle is in roadworthy condition. However, it is not the same as having your vehicle serviced and the MOT test does not check the general mechanical condition of the vehicle.
**Changes to the MOT test - May 2018**
From 20th May 2018, the MOT test in the UK is changing and will introduce a new way in which faults are classified. The existing 'advisory' system will be replaced and vehicle faults recorded during the MOT will now be classified as either Minor, Major or Dangerous. Any faults identified as either Major or Dangerous will result in an immediate MOT failure.
MOT testing is required by law on all vehicles in the UK that are 3 years old or more. The annual inspection follows strict criteria set out by the DVSA that determines if your car is fit for purpose and in roadworthy condition. The MOT test covers a broad range of vehicle safety checks including lights, tyres, seatbelts and emissions and can only be carried out by an MOT garage with DVSA-approved examiners.
